Pushkar is one of the most famous tourist destination in India, as a result of which thousands of tourists visit the place each year. Depicting the very basic instincts of the culture, the city showcases the beautiful colors of  Rajasthan. Most people visit Pushkar to be part of the popular Pushkar Mela (fair) which is organized every year in the month of November. One of the largest Camel fairs in the world, the occasion sees a huge participation by the locals and visitors alike. It is held on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and the fair continues for five days till Kartik Purnima.

Pushkar is also known for being a temple town. Most of these temples were constructed centuries ago by the royal lineage and carry a great mythical story with them. Many of these temples were destroyed in course of the Muslim conquests, but they were rebuilt again, along with some other new ones. Amongst the most famous ones, is the Brahma Temple, built in 14th century.

Eating Out in Pushkar

Owing to being the religious city, non-vegetarian food and liquor are strictly prohibited here. So, all you will be having here is vegetarian food only. You can eat-out in local restaurants and street shops at very affordable rates. Yet it is always advisable to have food from restaurants only. Some of the well known food joints are Wild Roses Restaurant, Narayan, Travelers Boutique Pushkar, Honey Dew Cafe and The Sixth Sense to name a few.

Shopping in Pushkar

Apart from being a pilgrimage site, Pushkar is also noted for shopping. The popular shopping items that you can find in the local bazaars are textiles, puppets, jewelry, pottery, leather goods and embroidered clothes. Pushkar fair is one of the most popular destinations for shopping where you can buy a variety of Lac bangles, beads, camel covers, clothes and other handicraft items.  The major shopping destinations in the city are Kedalganj Bazaar, Sarafa Bazar and Baza Bazar.

Pushkar is also known as the temple city for the numerous temples in and around the city. Some of the very popular temples are Brahma Temple, Rangji or Rangnath Temple, Apteshwar Temple, Savitri Temple and Varah Temple. Apart from this, the 52 bathing ghats in the city are visited by pilgrims from different parts of the country. The Puskar Lake is one of the most sacred sites for Hindus. The Sambar lake serves a wonderful place for excursions. This lake is a bird watchers paradise and is known to be a home of more than 140 species of Avifauna.
